President Murmu to inaugurate Karunanidhi centenary celebrations in Chennai on 5 June

President Droupadi Murmu will inaugurate the centenary celebrations of Tamil Nadu’s late chief minister M Karunanidhi in Chennai on 5 June.

She will also inaugurate a government-run multi-super speciality hospital in the state capital.

The ₹230-crore six-storey Kalaignar Memorial Multi-Super Speciality Hospital at Guindy was constructed as part of the centenary celebrations.

On Friday, 28 April, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin met Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhawan and invited her to preside over the centenary celebrations of his father and late chief minister M Karunanidhi.

He also invited her to the inauguration of the hospital.

Stalin reached New Delhi on Friday morning and was welcomed by DMK MPs and party functionaries.

After spending a short while at the Tamil Nadu House in Chanakyapuri, he proceeded to the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President’s official residence.

Later, the Rashtrapati Bhawan issued a statement saying the President would attend both programmes.

Murmu would also virtually inaugurate “Kalaignar Kottam”, which has been constructed in the Tiruvarur district, Karunanidhi’s home town.

On 3 June 2021, the 97th birth anniversary of Karunanidhi, Stalin announced that a multi-super speciality hospital would be set up on the premises of the King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research at Guindy in Chennai.

The year-long centenary celebration’s inauguration has been scheduled to be held at YMCA Ground in Chennai on 5 June.

Stalin meets Nirmala Sitaraman

While returning to Chennai, Stalin had a chance meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. She was in the VIP lounge, waiting for her flight to Mumbai.

The leaders exchanged pleasantries and had a brief talk. Stalin later left for Chennai.

Stalin was scheduled to travel to Delhi on a private carrier on Thursday, but the trip was postponed after the aircraft developed a technical snag.
