Police open fire on 17-year-old armed with machete in Tamil Nadu, cite self defence

The juvenile tried to attack the police after they attempted to rescue a 22-year-old man from an attack by him and another juvenile.

Synopsis: A police Sub-Inspector (SI) opened fire on a 17-year-old boy after he allegedly attacked officers with a machete during a violent confrontation. The juvenile tried to attack the officer after they attempted to rescue a 22-year-old man from an attack by him and another juvenile.

A tense situation unfolded in Pappakudi village in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu on the night of Monday, 28 July, when a police Sub-Inspector (SI) opened fire on a 17-year-old boy after he allegedly attacked him with a machete during a violent confrontation.

The juvenile tried to attack the police officer after they attempted to rescue a 22-year-old man from an attack by him and another juvenile.

The police officer also sustained injuries from a machete attack. Police investigation revealed that the minors already have multiple criminal cases pending against them.

The injured juvenile, the SI, and the assaulted youngster have all been hospitalised and are reported to be in stable condition.

The incident

According to reports, the incident began when the minors and one other associate were drinking alcohol in Rasthavoor on the outskirts of Pappakudi village.

During this time, they allegedly attacked a man named S Shakthi Kumar, who belongs to another community, leaving him with a machete injury on his leg.

Upon receiving information from locals, police personnel rushed to the spot. When they attempted to intervene, Shanmugasundaram tried to attack the officers with a machete. He then fled into a nearby house and locked himself in a bathroom.

Even as police tried to break open the door, the minor continued his violent resistance, striking the door with the machete. As he attempted to assault the officers again, police opened fire in self-defence, injuring him in the abdomen. He was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Cases registered

Following the incident, two separate cases have been filed: One under nine sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempt to murder, and the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for the attack on Shakthi.

The second case was filed under 11 sections of the BNS, including charges for assaulting police, preventing them from performing duty, attempt to murder, and use of weapons, involving the minor and others.

Meanwhile, a large number of police personnel have been deployed in Papakudi under the supervision of the District Superintendent of Police, with senior officials continuously monitoring the situation.
