The incident

On Wednesday morning, Shalini had left for school as usual. As she was walking, Muniraj, son of Kuppusamy from the same locality, followed her. About 500 metres from her home, he took out a knife, hidden in his waistband, and stabbed her multiple times.

Hearing the girl’s cries, locals rushed to the spot. However, by then, Muniraj had fled, leaving the knife behind. The severely injured Shalini was immediately taken to the Rameswaram Government Hospital on a two-wheeler by neighbours after calling for an ambulance. However, doctors declared that she had been brought dead.

Police from the Harbour Police Station arrived at the crime scene soon and arrested Muniraj. Initial investigations revealed that he had been harassing Shalini for several days, insisting on a romantic relationship with him. Shalini had rejected his advances and reportedly informed her relatives, who confronted and warned him.

The girl’s body has been kept at the Rameswaram Government Medical College Hospital. The heart-wrenching scenes of relatives grieving over her body have caused deep sorrow in the area.
