Synopsis: Intense buzz surrounds former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai, with reports suggesting he may launch a new party, “Tamilaga Makkal Sakthi Katchi”. While aides dismiss the rumours, his scheduled Delhi meeting with BJP national president Nitin Nabin fuels talk of leverage tactics. Annamalai’s disappointment over Coimbatore North and his non-contest in 2026 add to uncertainty about his future role.

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai is at the centre of intense speculation amid reports that he may launch a separate political party.

Political circles have been abuzz with rumours that Annamalai, who has been relatively less active in politics since being replaced as the BJP’s Tamil Nadu state president, could soon part ways with the party. Notably, he also did not contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, further fuelling speculation about his political future.

Amid these developments, reports have emerged claiming that Annamalai is planning to float a new political outfit. Meanwhile, he is scheduled to travel to Delhi today to meet BJP national president Nitin Nabin Sinha.

What do Annamalai’s close aides say?

When contacted, sources close to Annamalai dismissed the reports as mere “speculation” and denied any plans to launch a new party.

However, some individuals within Annamalai’s political circle reportedly claim that he has been maintaining suspense around the issue and has not disclosed his plans to anyone.

To verify the claims, we also spoke to sources in Delhi.

According to Delhi-based sources, “There are reports that Annamalai may launch a party named “Tamilaga Makkal Sakthi Katchi” (TMSK), but it is unclear whether the information is authentic.”

Delhi meeting fuels more speculation

The rumours have gained further momentum as Annamalai is set to travel to Delhi today to meet BJP national president Nitin Nabin.

According to Delhi sources, “BJP has already replaced state presidents in four states recently, and discussions are underway about similar leadership changes in Tamil Nadu as well. At the same time, the party is reportedly planning a reshuffle involving more than 10 Union Ministers later this month.”

The source further added, “In such a situation, spreading rumours about launching a new political party could be a strategy by Annamalai to increase his leverage within the party and strengthen his bargaining position before the central leadership.”

The developments come at a time when senior Tamil Nadu BJP leaders such as Nainar Nagendran and Vanathi Srinivasan have seen their influence within the party decline following their defeats in the 2026 Assembly elections.

In particular, sources say Annamalai had sought the Coimbatore North constituency, where Vanathi Srinivasan eventually contested.

Believing that he had a strong chance of winning from the seat, Annamalai was reportedly disappointed after the constituency was allotted to Vanathi Srinivasan, and later chose not to contest the election at all.

Against this backdrop, discussions have once again emerged around the possibility of Annamalai seeking either the Tamil Nadu BJP state president post or a berth in the Union Cabinet.
