Former Union Minister of State L. Murugan on Thursday, October 29, rejected allegations regarding his resignation and stated that he stepped down as a minister and Rajya Sabha MP to focus on strengthening the BJP’s organisation in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

In a press release, the former BJP state president said he resigned as a minister on October 13, 2026, after obtaining the “approval and blessings” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said his objective was to work with party cadres at the grassroots level, improve their preparedness and strengthen the party’s presence across the state.

Murugan said he intended to travel to villages across Tamil Nadu, meet people and work alongside senior BJP leaders, office-bearers and party workers to expand the organisation. He also said he would dedicate his full time and energy to the party’s preparations for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Rejecting speculation surrounding his resignation, Murugan described allegations circulated in the media as “baseless, absolutely fabricated, malicious and politically motivated.” He alleged that the statements were intended to damage his reputation and create confusion and unrest among the public.

Murugan called upon those responsible for spreading the false information to issue a public apology. He also urged media organisations, social media page administrators, content creators and other users to remove allegedly defamatory content. He warned of legal action against those spreading misinformation concerning his resignation.

Murugan stated that he did not belong to a political family and came from an extremely poor background. He said his parents earned their livelihood through daily-wage labour and by tending to livestock.

He then recalled his tenure in the BJP-led Union Government, noting that he had served in the Information and Broadcasting, Parliamentary Affairs, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying ministries. He also highlighted his work as Vice-Chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes.

In his statement, Murugan also praised PM Modi’s “concern” for Tamil Nadu, citing projects including Chennai Metro, the expansion of Thoothukudi Port, highway projects and the redevelopment of 26 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

He also referred to Modi’s visits to his residence in New Delhi for Pongal celebrations and claimed the prime minister’s “affection” for Tamil language, culture and the Thirukkural had been a source of pride for Tamils.

Reiterating that his resignation was intended to strengthen the BJP at every level, Murugan said his priority was to serve the people of Tamil Nadu and prepare the party for the upcoming elections.
