The Tamil Nadu Cabinet has approved the formation of a commission to conduct a ‘social justice survey’ in the state, with the exercise scheduled to be carried out next year.
The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday, October 29.
Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu earlier said the survey would be conducted after the Union Government’s caste enumeration exercise as part of the Census and would focus on the Adi Dravidar population in the state. He stated that there was an immediate need for a focused survey of the Adi Dravidar population, similar to the exercise undertaken for tribal communities.
The minister explained that the exercise is intended as a detailed socio-economic survey which would provide crucial data on the community’s actual socio-economic conditions and help identify factors hindering its advancement.
“A detailed socio-economic survey would help assess the community’s family income, occupation, land ownership, educational status, school and college enrolment, dropout rates, and access to welfare schemes,” the minister had said, reported The New Indian Express.
During the Cabinet meeting on Thursday, CM Vijay also reportedly sought individual feedback from ministers on the functioning of their departments, the issues they face and the cooperation extended by officials.
The chief minister reportedly stressed that ministers should prioritise people’s needs, understand their demands and take steps to fulfil their requests.
Separately, the Cabinet also approved permissions for eight companies to set up industries in Tamil Nadu.
