Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President Vijay is likely to appear before the CBI in Delhi on Monday, 12 December, in connection with the stampede in the Karur district of Tamil Nadu in September 2025. A summons was issued to him on 6 January, asking him to appear at the CBI office.
Vijay is likely to appear at the Delhi CBI office at 11 am on Monday. He is scheduled to depart from Chennai at 7 am on a special flight to Delhi.
The inquiry relates to the stampede that occurred on 27 September in Velusamipuram in Karur during a public outreach event addressed by TVK founder Vijay. The incident resulted in the deaths of 41 people and left more than 100 others injured.
Earlier, senior TVK functionaries, including Bussy Anand, Adhav Arjuna and CTR Nirmal Kumar, were questioned by the CBI for around 17 hours in Delhi.
Ahead of Vijay’s visit, the TVK had sought security arrangements from the Delhi Police through an email. The request was sent on behalf of the party by CTR Nirmal Kumar.
The Delhi Police have confirmed that security arrangements are in place for Vijay. According to the Union government’s Y-category security protocol, full security is likely to be provided from the airport to all locations
In addition to his personal security personnel, Central Reserve forces and Delhi Police officials are expected to be deployed.
Tight security is likely to be in place along the route to the CBI office, at his place of stay, and at other key locations. With a crowd expected to gather outside the CBI office to see Vijay, security in the area is likely to be further intensified.
The CBI took over the case following a Supreme Court directive.
On 31 October last year, a 15-member CBI team led by ASP Mahesh Kumar, SP Praveen Kumar, DSP Ramakrishnan, and Inspector Manoharan carried out a field inspection at Velusamipuram, Karur — the site of the stampede.
The team used advanced 3D digital survey technology to assess road width, crowd capacity, bus stands, and nearby streets.
The case was originally registered based on a complaint filed by Karur Town Inspector Manivannan against TVK general secretary Bussy Anand, joint secretary Nirmal Kumar, western district secretary Mathiyazhagan and others.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government, on 2 December, filed its counter-affidavit before the Supreme Court to cancel the CBI investigation into the case and to hand over the probe back to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted earlier by the Madras High Court.
The government also sought the lifting of the stay imposed on the inquiry being conducted by the one-man commission headed by Justice (retd.) Aruna Jagadeesan, so that the commission’s investigation into the Karur incident can be resumed.
