Synopsis: Former Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president K Annamalai has quit the party, with National President Nitin Nabin accepting his resignation from the party’s primary membership on Friday. The move follows meetings earlier this week with the BJP leadership. Sources close to him said he is expected to remain politically silent for now, but may launch a new political party in the coming months.

Former Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president K Annamalai has resigned from the party, with National President Nitin Nabin accepting his resignation from the party’s primary membership on Friday, 5 June.

The resignation brings to a close days of speculation over the former IPS officer’s future in the saffron party and follows a series of meetings with the party’s central leadership earlier this week, during which he is said to have submitted his resignation letter.

BJP National President Nitin Nabin accepted the resignation.

On 2 June, Annamalai met Mr Nabin, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and senior BJP functionary BL Santhosh. According to sources familiar with the developments, he discussed the BJP’s performance in the last Assembly election, the reasons for the party’s defeat, the present political situation in Tamil Nadu and his own political activities.

The sources said he also conveyed his dissatisfaction over certain recent developments within the party and reportedly indicated that “there was no point in continuing under the present circumstances.”

On Thursday, Annamalai announced on social media that he would interact with the public at 12 pm on Friday to share his thoughts and have an “open, heart-to-heart conversation”.

According to sources close to him, Annamalai is expected to remain politically silent for the time being. However, they said he may launch a new political party in the coming months.
