Synopsis: Manikandan (47), a resident of TV Nagar and the BJP’s district president of the Weavers’ Wing, had been involved in a long-standing dispute with his neighbour, DMK functionary Arumugam (49).
A DMK functionary who allegedly attacked a BJP office-bearer in Chennai’s Thirumangalam area and fled the scene has been arrested, on Saturday, 15 November, police said.
Manikandan (47), a resident of TV Nagar and the BJP’s district president of the Weavers’ Wing, had been involved in a long-standing dispute with his neighbour, DMK functionary Arumugam (49).
The dispute reportedly began after Arumugam was accused of encroaching on adjoining government land, felling trees on the property, and attempting to build a compound wall. Manikandan had filed multiple complaints against him with the Thirumangalam police station and the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office, claiming no action had been taken.
Police sources said the tension between the two families had been escalating, with frequent quarrels reported.
Saturday morning, while Manikandan was performing puja at a Vinayagar idol placed at the entrance of his house, Arumugam allegedly arrived on a two-wheeler wearing a helmet, took out a concealed machete and attacked him, attempting to kill him.
Neighbours and relatives rushed to the spot, rescued Manikandan—who was found bleeding heavily—and admitted him to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for treatment. Arumugam fled the area with an associate.
CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media, triggering widespread reactions.
Following a complaint from Manikandan’s relatives, police examined CCTV visuals and launched a search. Preliminary investigation revealed that Arumugam had planned the attack due to ongoing complaints filed against him regarding the alleged encroachment.
Thirumangalam police later arrested Arumugam and are interrogating him. A second suspect who fled with him is currently absconding, and a search is underway.
