Days after Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced the cancellation of the controversial greenfield airport project in Parandur, citing protests by farmers and ecological concerns, the TVK-led government notified plans to acquire land in the same region for a different industrial project.
A Gazette notification dated September 1, 2026 announced the acquisition of 8.3820 hectares of land at Maduramangalum in the Kancheepuram district for the Maduramangalum Industrial Park.
Maduramangalum is located near the site where the now-abandoned greenfield airport project was proposed.
The notification, issued by the Commissioner of Land Administration, invoked the Tamil Nadu Acquisition of Land for Industrial Purposes Act, 1997, and states that the land is being acquired for industrial purposes through the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT).
Separately, the government has also announced a ₹175-crore semiconductor and electronics manufacturing park at Maduramangalum, with plans involving more than 400 acres of patta land and government land.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S. Keerthana had indicated that the government might use the land acquired by the previous DMK-led government in Parandur for other industrial projects.

The government notification on land acquisition in Parandur came just days after CM Vijay announced in the Assembly that the TVK-led government is formally abandoning the proposed greenfield airport project in the region, considering its potential impact on the farmers and other residents.
“I stand firmly with the people who are protesting against the proposed airport in Parandur. I extend my support to the farmers who have been fighting against this project for a long time. Farmers are the backbone of the country, and these people are fighting to protect their agricultural land,” Vijay said, adding that the government has shortlisted some alternative lands for the proposed airport project.
The government is reportedly considering Cheyyur and Manallur near Gummidipoondi as alternative sites for the airport.
