Renowned Tamil scholar and Pattimandram moderator Solomon Pappaiah.
Renowned Tamil scholar and Pattimandram moderator Solomon Pappaiah passed away in Madurai on September 11 at the age of 90. He had been undergoing treatment due to age-related health issues.
Born on February 22, 1936, in Sathangudi village near Tirumangalam in Madurai district, Pappaiah served for several years as a Tamil professor at Madurai American College.
He became a household name in Tamil Nadu through his Pattimandram debates, where he was known for presenting deep ideas and literary perspectives in simple, accessible Tamil.
For more than three decades, he moderated Pattimandram programmes on television and served as a judge in thousands of debates in India and abroad. He was also known for his speeches on Tamil literature and wrote commentaries in simple Tamil on classical works, including the Thirukkural.
Pappaiah was awarded the Kalaimamani by the Tamil Nadu government in 2000. In recognition of his contribution to the Tamil language and literature, he was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2021.
He also appeared in several Tamil films, including Shankar-directed movies such as Mudhalvan, Boys and Sivaji.
Through his distinctive oratory and ability to take Tamil literature and public debate to ordinary people, Solomon Pappaiah carved out a lasting place in the cultural life of Tamil Nadu.
