Congress MP Manickam Tagore submitted an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to discuss the matter of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and its perceived threat to democratic rights.
“That this House do adjourn its business to discuss a matter of urgent public importance, namely, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, which jeopardises the fundamental right to vote of millions of eligible citizens, particularly from marginalised communities, and threatens the integrity of free and fair elections…,” he said in the notice.
Tagore also cited the reasons for his claim, including risk of disenfranchisement, opaque and arbitrary process, inappropriate timing and logistical challenges, constitutional and legal concerns, inaccessible documentation requirements, and allegations of political manipulation.
“As a representative of the Indian National Congress, I echo the concerns raised by our leadership, including Shri Rahul Gandhi and Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, that the SIR resembles a targeted effort to undermine democratic rights. I call for the immediate suspension of the SIR and a comprehensive review with all stakeholders to ensure no eligible voter is deprived of their fundamental right to vote,” he said.
“I, therefore, request that the normal business of the House be adjourned to discuss this critical issue, and that the Election Commission of India be directed to address these concerns to uphold the democratic values enshrined in our Constitution,” he added.
