An unidentified gang of three allegedly abducted a 19-year-old college student late on Sunday, 2 November, and gang-raped her at a secluded place near the Chitra International Airport in Coimbatore.

The young woman was sitting in a car with a male friend near Brindavan Nagar when the bike-borne gang accosted them. The gang reportedly attacked the duo with a billhook and damaged the four-wheeler, before dragging her away to a vacant plot around 11.30 pm.

The woman’s male friend alerted the Peelamedu police. After a prolonged search, the police found the traumatised woman around 4 am on Monday, 3 November, and admitted her to a private hospital.

According to the man’s statement, he was in the car with the woman when the gang asked them to alight. His attempt to drive away was foiled, and the men abducted the woman. The man, who suffered injuries while trying to save his friend, has been admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital.

Political outrage

Police have formed five special probe teams to hunt down the culprits. The area lacked CCTV cameras.

The midnight crime sparked severe outrage with the AIADMK, PMK, BJP and TNCC condemning the incident.

BJP’s former state president K Annamalai came down heavily on the DMK government, saying it had “utterly failed in both preventing sexual crimes and providing safety for women”.

“Since the DMK came to power in TN, incidents like these have shown that anti-social elements no longer fear the law or the police,” he noted on X.

BJP state president Nainar Nagendran said his party would organise a statewide protest, demanding the arrest of the culprits.
