Video shows police beating youth

Synopsis: A video showing Coimbatore police beating a youth during a drunk driving check has sparked controversy. The 25 June incident involved a youth fleeing with a constable in his car, later caught and beaten.

A video showing police officers beating a youth who allegedly drove off with a policeman inside his car during a routine drunk and drive check near Ukkadam in Coimbatore has surfaced and caused a stir.

The video dates back to 25 June, when police personnel from the Ukkadam Police Station’s Law and Order Division were conducting a routine vehicle check on Vincent Road in Ukkadam.

During the check, they stopped a luxury car, and asked the youth driving the vehicle to step out, he refused. After which, a head constable got into the car to check whether the youth was under the influence of alcohol.

Suddenly, the youth accelerated the car with the constable still inside. The other officers present chased the car.

Meanwhile, the constable inside the car managed to stop the vehicle using his leg. Soon after, the chasing police officers caught up, safely rescued the constable, and apprehended the youth.

At the scene, the police reportedly beat the youth with a baton and interrogated him. The youth was then taken to the police station for further inquiry.

During questioning, it was revealed that the youth had consumed alcohol and, out of fear of the police check, had tried to flee. He apologized to the police, after which they fined him for drunk driving, gave him a stern warning, and let him go.

However, the incident has now drawn attention as the video of the police beating the youth has emerged.

A tit for tat?

This comes shortly after another controversy in Coimbatore, where a DMK functionary was caught on video intimidating a police sub-inspector during a dispute over AIADMK flex banners in Townhall.

Notably, the same sub-inspector involved in that earlier incident is seen in this new video assaulting the youth.

Sources within the police have claimed that this latest video was released as an act of retaliation—”a tit for tat”—in response to the earlier footage involving the DMK functionary.
