RMC Chennai issued a red alert to Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts on Wednesday, orange alert to Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Villupuram, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Salem.
Synopsis: About 22,000 Corporation personnel, including engineers, staff, and conservancy workers, have been deployed along with 2,149 field staff from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board to carry out relief works.
The Greater Chennai Corporation has set up 215 relief camps and 106 community kitchens across the rain-lashed city to support residents affected by the heavy downpour.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has warned of very heavy rainfall in isolated places, even as a low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal gathered strength.
Of the 106 community kitchens, 68 are currently operational, providing food to those relocated in shelters. On Wednesday, 22 October, breakfast was served to 1,46,950 people, according to Corporation officials.
The large-scale relief operations followed Chief Minister MK Stalin’s directive to all district Collectors to take immediate precautionary measures to mitigate public hardship.
On 19 October, the chief minister reviewed the state’s monsoon preparedness through a video conference with district Collectors from the State Emergency Operations Centre at Ezhilagam, Chennai.
He urged officials to expedite relief activities, relocate residents from vulnerable areas, and ensure the availability of food, drinking water, and medical care at all camps.

In Chennai, Pudukkottai, Perambalur, Salem, Namakkal, Tiruppur and Karur, schools remained closed due to heavy rains. A holiday has been declared for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, in Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Ranipet, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Trichy, and Sivaganga districts.
Schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal were closed on Wednesday.
