AIADMK General Council passes key resolutions: To work towards bringing back EPS as CM

The meeting approved an alliance with the BJP and endorsed the AIADMK’s decision to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Synopsis: Among the resolutions, the general council resolved that AIADMK cadres will work towards bringing Edappadi K. Palaniswami back as Chief Minister, and granted him full authority to lead seat-sharing talks and decide alliance arrangements for the upcoming Assembly elections.

The AIADMK held their General Council meeting on Wednesday, 10 December, in Chennai, where the members passed a series of political and policy resolutions.

Among the resolutions, the general council resolved that AIADMK cadres will work towards bringing Edappadi K. Palaniswami back as Chief Minister, and granted him full authority to lead seat-sharing talks and decide alliance arrangements for the upcoming Assembly elections.

The members also observed a moment of silence for over 400 people, including the 41 who died at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam event in Karur.

The resolutions

The below are the resolutions passed.

  • The meeting approved an alliance with the BJP and endorsed the AIADMK’s decision to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
  • It demanded that the Union government approve the Metro Rail projects in Coimbatore and Madurai, while criticising the Tamil Nadu government for failing to prepare the project reports properly.
  • There was strong criticism of the DMK government for failing to protect people during floods and cyclones, as well as for its handling of rain and flood management.
  • The members expressed support for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, stating that it protects the rights of genuine voters.
  • They urged the state to increase the paddy procurement moisture level to 22 percent and accused the DMK government of failing farmers, particularly in the Thanjavur delta.
  • Members further alleged that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s administration has shown authoritarian tendencies and has an “attitude of intimidating the judiciary”. A resolution was passed asserting that the government must not interfere in the judiciary.
  • The meeting condemned the DMK government for a perceived decline in law and order, citing rising incidents of thefts, murders, and robberies.
  • It also charged that women’s safety has deteriorated over the past four-and-a-half years, affecting girls, young women, and senior women.
  • The government was criticised for extravagant revenue spending, which was blamed for the rising state debt.
  • Members alleged that investment inflow has slowed, describing the state’s industrial performance as “turtle-paced”, and accused the Chief Minister of promoting “misleading statistics”.
  • The DMK was condemned for not fulfilling its NEET-related promises.
  • There was also a reference to “serious corruption” in the Madurai Corporation, citing the mayor’s resignation.
  • Members accused the DMK government of allowing discrimination against Dalits and other marginalised communities to persist.
