The Coimbatore City Police on Monday, 13 March, arrested four persons, including two members of a right-wing organisation, on charges of assaulting migrant workers.

According to the police, migrant worker Gowtham Siyamel Kattuva (33), working as a goldsmith, was on his way to his residence with his friends Thanmai Jana and Jagath on Sunday night when he was stopped by four men on Edayar Street.

The four people allegedly teased and confronted Kattuva and assaulted him for not making way for them on the road.

Kattuva and his friends later went home, where they are staying with other migrant workers.

They narrated the incident to his friends Mono and Sheik Shavan, who were also migrant workers, and came to know that the same group of men had attacked them near Gandhi Park.

They decided to approach the Variety Hall police and lodge a complaint against those four unknown persons.

After a preliminary investigation, the police detained four persons — college students S Pragadeesh (20) and Velmurugan (20), and two people attached to a right-wing organisation, Surya Prakash (19) and P Prakash (21).

During their probe, the police found that all four were habitual offenders, teasing and confronting migrant workers in the area.

All four were arrested and a case was filed against them under Sections 294 (b) (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.

All four were produced before the city magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
