18-year-old Yansi was killed after a car rammed into her two-wheeler.
Synopsis: An 18-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil refugee woman was killed and a 17-year-old girl injured after a car allegedly rammed into their two-wheeler following a dispute near a private bar in Chennai. Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused intentionally rammed the two-wheeler as an act of revenge following an earlier dispute.
An 18-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil refugee woman was killed, and a 17-year-old girl was injured after a car allegedly rammed into their two-wheeler following a dispute near a private bar in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai late on Saturday, 30 May.
According to police, the deceased, identified as Yansi, was a resident of a Sri Lankan refugee camp. She had reportedly visited a private bar in the Koyambedu area in Chennai along with her friends. During a dance event at the bar, a quarrel broke out between two groups.
Police said the bouncers at the bar intervened and sent both groups out of the premises. However, the clash allegedly continued on the road, where both groups attacked each other.
Yansi and her friends were travelling on three two-wheelers when members of the rival group allegedly chased them in a car. In a fit of rage, the occupants of the car allegedly rammed into the two-wheeler ridden by Yansi.
The impact threw Yansi off the vehicle, killing her on the spot. The 17-year-old girl travelling with her sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at the Kilpauk Government Hospital in Chennai. Police said she was unconscious when admitted to the hospital.
The CMBT police have arrested three people in connection with the incident and seized the car involved in the crime. Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused intentionally rammed the two-wheeler as an act of revenge following the earlier dispute at the bar.
Police said the car is allegedly linked to one Suman Sakthivel and added that CCTV footage from the area is being examined as part of the investigation.
Special police teams have been formed to trace and arrest the remaining absconding accused.
