14-year-old student subjected to ragging at ITI Madurai

The police clarified that the attack was a case of ragging and not related to caste-based violence.

Synopsis: A 14-year-old ITI student in Chekkanoorani, Madurai, was stripped and beaten by three batchmates in a hostel on 18 September. The assault, recorded on video, surfaced online on 23 September, prompting outrage. Police arrested the juveniles after the victim’s father filed a complaint. Legal action was taken under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act and other charges.

In a disturbing case of ragging, a 14-year-old student at a government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Chekkanoorani, Madurai, was reportedly stripped and beaten by three of his batchmates in the hostel.

The incident occurred on Thursday, 18 September, and was recorded by a student. The video of the assault surfaced online on Tuesday, 23 September, sparking widespread outrage.

The victim, a first-year ITI student from Varusanadu in Theni district, had joined the institute after completing class VIII.

The three accused, aged 15 and 17, were also enrolled in the first-year ITI course.

Following a complaint by the victim’s father, the Madurai district police registered a case and took the accused juveniles into custody for questioning.

Legal action has been initiated under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997, along with charges of assault and criminal intimidation.
