Ending the suspense over the fate of his Praja Sangrama Yatra, BJP state president Bandi Sanjay Kumar got a reprieve from the Telangana High Court on Monday, 28 November, after the police had denied him permission on the grounds that it might lead to communal tensions in the state.

The high court, granting conditional permission to him to resume the fifth leg of his yatra, said he should not enter communally-sensitive Bhainsa town in Adilabad district during the march.

The yatra, covering 220 km in three Lok Sabha and eight Assembly constituencies in five districts, was supposed to resume after performing pooja at Adelli Pochamma temple in Nirmal town before heading to Bhainsa.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadvanis was the chief guest for the public meeting organised at Bhainsa in connection with the yatra.

Bandi Sanjay stopped

On Monday, Sanjay was expected to cover over five km on the first day of the yatra before halting for the night near Gundagam. But the police denied him permission on Sunday, prompting the party to move a lunch motion in the high court requesting permission for the yatra.

On Sunday night, tension prevailed after the police denied permission for the yatra. The police also stopped Bandi Sanjay at Venkatapur when he was on his way to Bhainsa to attend Monday’s meeting. A heated argument took place between the police, Sanjay and BJP activists over the denial of permission.

The activists then staged protests in Nirmal and Jagtial, lashing out at the police for denying permission.

Criticising the police for their high-handedness, BJP vice-president DK Aruna alleged the police stopped the yatra at the behest of the state government.

After covering 220 km, the yatra will conclude on 17 December at Karimnagar where a public meeting would be organised, with several prominent leaders from New Delhi expected to attend.

Sanjay’s fourth leg yatra also faced a tense situation in Jangaon in August 2022 when the police arrested him for attempting to stage a protest against the arrest of BJP activists after registering cases against them.
