BRS leader K Kavitha, who has been arrested in a money-laundering case, has drawn a comparison between her and sexual abuse-accused JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna.

Kavitha, the daughter of BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao, said on Tuesday, 7 May, that while people like Prajwal were free, she was imprisoned.

The statement came even as a special CBI court in Delhi extended her judicial custody till 14 May in the case registered in connection with the Delhi liquor policy scam.

The court also extended the judicial custody of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal till 20 May.

Special judge for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) matters Kaveri Baweja extended Kavitha’s custody after she was produced before the court because her remand had expired.

The order came after the ED told the court that the investigation in the case was at a crucial stage.

The probe agency also said in court that it might file a charge sheet against Kavitha within a week.

Why Kavitha raked up Prajwal case

The ED arrested BRS MLC Kavitha in Hyderabad on 15 March under certain sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The arrest came hours after officials of the ED and the Income Tax (I-T) Department descended on Kavitha’s posh Banjara Hills residence in Hyderabad and conducted searches.

While being presented in court on Tuesday, Kavitha told reporters that the authorities “have let people like Prajwal Revanna leave the country and arrested people like us”.

Even as people across the country were voting during the third phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, she said: “People of the country should note this.”

The Prajwal Revanna case

JD(S) leader and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna is at the centre of a slew of sexual abuse allegations, some of which are also levelled against his father and Karnataka MLA HD Revanna.

However, just before the allegations became public late last month, Prajwal flew to Germany and is still there, even as the CBI has put out a blue-corner notice amid demands for his arrest. This was what Kavitha was referring to on Tuesday.

The father-son duo have been named as accused in a handful of sexual abuse cases, with complainants saying they were targeted at the Revanna residence.

The allegations came to light with USB storage drives of apparently hundreds of videos that allegedly showed the two politicians sexually assaulting women.

The matter has been witnessing bombshell revelations and developments on almost a daily basis, ranging from the senior Revanna’s arrest to sordid details from the survivors to even allegations that Congress was directing the probe to give it a political angle.

Meanwhile, JD(S) chief and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda and his son — former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy — just days ago obtained an order from a Bengaluru court that restricted media houses from reporting their names in connection with the sexual abuse allegations against Prajwal Revanna.
