The system is moving west-northwest at a speed of around 15 kmph and is expected to continue its movement towards the southwest Bay of Bengal over the next 36 hours.
As of 5.30 a.m, the deep depression was located about 1,020 km east-southeast of Chennai and around 860 km from Karaikal. Weather officials noted that the formation of such systems during January is not uncommon.
Under the influence of the system, Tamil Nadu is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall in the coming days, with coastal districts receiving heavier spells.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued orange alerts for Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur and Puducherry on 9 and 10 January, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall.
Yellow alerts have also been issued for several districts across the State on different days, warning of heavy rain.
Strong winds and rough sea conditions are also expected along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts. Squally winds reaching up to 60 kmph may prevail on January 9, while sea conditions are likely to remain rough to very rough over the Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Comorin area till January 10.
In view of the worsening conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, and those already at sea have been asked to return or avoid the affected regions.
