Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday, 21 June tendered his resignation from office with immediate effect, citing health concerns and the need to prioritise medical advice.
“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the constitution,” Dhankhar wrote in his resignation addressed to President Droupadi Murmu.
“I extend my deepest gratitude to Your Excellency – the Hon’ble President of India for her unwavering support and the soothing wonderful working relationship we maintained during my tenure.”
Dhankhar, who served as the 14th Vice-President of India and ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, said he enjoyed a cordial rapport with lawmakers.
Once the President accepts Dhankhar’s resignation, he ceases to perform the functions of the Rajya Sabha Chairperson.
In his absence, the Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha – or any other member designated by the House – presides over proceedings in line with Article 92 of the Constitution.
A vacancy in the office of the Vice-President requires an election to be held at the earliest.
However, unlike presidential vacancies, the Constitution does not lay down a fixed timeline. The Election Commission of India conducts the process under Article 324, with an electoral college comprising members from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
A veteran lawyer and politician, Dhankhar was nominated as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s candidate for the vice-presidential election in 2022.
With the NDA then enjoying a clear majority in the electoral college composed of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, Dhankhar secured a comfortable victory in the 6 August 2022 election.
He formally succeeded M Venkaiah Naidu upon the conclusion of the latter’s term on 10 August.
Prior to assuming the vice-presidency, Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal, where he was known for his frequent and often sharp conflict with the Trinamool Congress-led state government.
