A Youth Congress leader in Hyderabad has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife.

Vallabh Reddy, son of Congress leader in Nalgonda Ranga Sai Reddy, was arrested on Wednesday, 26 July, on charges of murdering his wife Lahari Reddy, 27. However, news of his arrest broke only on Saturday.

On 14 July, Lahari’s parents got a call saying she had fallen off the stairs and sustained head injuries. The FIR filed by the Narayanaguda police quoted her father as saying that she was taken to a private hospital at 9.22 am, where she died at 11 am while undergoing treatment.

The FIR, accessed by South First, said the police were told that the woman had died of a heart attack. Lahari’s father Jaipal Reddy told the police that he did not suspect anyone, including his son-in-law or his parents.

The police initially registered a case under 174 CrPC (suspicious death). During the investigation, the police found that Lahari had suffered other injuries as well.

Speaking to South First, Narayanguda SHO G Srinivasu said they arrested Vallabh Reddy based on the post-mortem report and eyewitness accounts.

“The post-mortem examination showed internal injuries in her abdomen. There was also an eyewitness who saw Vallabh Reddy hitting Lahari,” the officer said.

The police said Vallabh Reddy banged Lahari’s head against a wall amidst an argument, causing the injury. Lahari and Vallabh Reddy, 29, got married on 21 April, 2022, and had been living in the Himayathnagar area.

Speaking to South First, Jaipal Reddy denied murder charges against his son-in-law. He did not suspect any foul play, he said.

“Lahari fell after she felt dizzy. That is all. I stand by my word that it was just an accident,” the father said.

The police booked Vallabh Reddy under sections 302 (murder charges), and 201 (disappearance of evidence) of the IPC.
