Apparently determined to see the last of all vestiges that remind the rule of “doras” (feudal lords), the Telangana Cabinet has decided, among other things, to redesign the Telangana Thalli statute to reflects the thoughts of the people on how she should look like.

The Cabinet, which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Sunday, 4 February, also cleared a proposal to register the vehicles with the prefix TG instead of TS.

It also decided to change the state emblem and adopt poet Ande Sri’s Jaya Jayahe Telangana as the state anthem.

The big decisions

Information and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu briefed reporters on the Cabinet decisions.

They said that the intention was to make the state reflect the feelings and aspirations of the people.

“The erstwhile BRS government took decisions that one way or the other smacked of the ‘rule of gadis‘ and those that helped the party in one way or the other,” said Srinivasa Reddy.

Though the Centre issued orders for using the prefix TG for the registration of vehicles, the previous government used TS as it would automatically make one think of the TRS (now the BRS), he claimed.

“We want to reverse all such decisions since Telangana belongs to the people and not one individual,” said the minister.

He pointed out that even the Telangana Thalli statue was also designed in accordance with the thoughts of one leader — a decision the present state government does not approve of.

“The Telangana Thalli statue is associated with the Telangana sentiment, which means it involves people. We will place the proposals before the people and redesign the statue to truly reflect the aspirations of the people after considering the feedback,” said Srinivasa Reddy.

As for the state emblem, the Cabinet decided to remake it in such a way that it would reflect the struggle of the Telangana protagonists for the creation of the state for funds, a fair share of river waters, and employment (nidhulu, neellu, and niyamakalu).

The new emblem would capture the quintessence of the Telangana movement and the aspirations of the people who fought for it, said Srinivasa Reddy.

Other decisions

The Cabinet also approved the proposal to call the Budget session of the Assembly on 8 February. The session will begin with the Governor’s address.

There will be a discussion on the motion of thanks to the Governor on the second day. On the third day, the finance minister will present the budget in the House.

The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) will decide how many days the sessions should run.

Sridhar Babu said that the process of filling 2 lakh vacancies in the government began on Sunday, and that the government was committed to delivering on all its promises.

The Cabinet also discussed and finalised the implementation of two more guarantees, but the minister did not specify which. He said the chief minister would make an announcement in the Assembly.

The Cabinet also okayed the proposal to conduct a caste census in the state as it was a promise made not only by the Telangana Congress but party senior leader Rahul Gandhi himself. He said the party was committed to starting the process for the caste census.

The other decisions of the Cabinet were the formation of the Kodangal Region Development Authority (Kodangal is the chief minister’s Assembly constituency), the allotment of 100 acres of land for the construction of a new building for Telangana High Court, and the upgradation of the 65 government ITIs in the state into advanced technology centres.

The Cabinet also approved the proposal for the premature release of prisoners who showed good conduct.
