Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday, 2 February, slammed BRS leaders for their statements that they would bring down the Congress government in the state in three to six months.

Kicking off the campaign for the Lok Sabha elections at Indervelli in the Adilabad district, he exploded at the BRS and its chief K Chandrashekar Rao.

He said: “Who can pull down our government? Will you (people) allow it if the BRS tries to overthrow our dispensation? Drive them away if they come into your midst and say that the days of the Congress government in the state are numbered.”

He put forth some other ideas to deal with such people: “Tie them to neem trees and beat them up. Put garden lizards in their trousers.”

‘KCR did not bother’

Revanth tore into the BRS for ignoring the filling of government vacancies.

“We have recently filled staff nurses posts. We have thus empowered them. We will take measures to fill 15,000 constable jobs within the next 15 days,” said the chief minister.

“KCR, when he was in power, did not bother about them when their recruitment ran into rough weather with court litigation. But as soon as I took over, I called the DGP and asked him to see that the stays in the courts are vacated,” he said.

Revanth also urged the people to support the Congress in the Lok Sabha polls as that alone could guarantee the protection of Telangana’s interests.

“If you elect BRS candidates, KCR will pledge them with the BJP at the centre,” he said.

This was a continuation of the continued volleys from both the Congress and the BRS that the other was secretly in league with the BJP.

Why Indervelli?

The chief minister chose Indervelli for sounding the bugle for campaigning since he won last year’s Telangana Assembly elections after kickstarting electioneering from the same village.

Friday was his maiden public meeting outside Hyderabad after taking over as the chief minister in December last year.

The Indervelli meeting — christened the Telangana Reconstruction Sabha — signalled the beginning of a series of meetings that Revanth intends to address to seek the support of the people in the Lok Sabha elections.

He is trying to make the best use of the Congress being the ruling party in the state to get traction with the people.

Indervelli is in Khanapur, which is one of the seven segments of the Adilabad Lok Sabha constituency. The Lok Sabha seat is at present held by BP’s Soyam Bapu Rao.

The chief minster, by visiting Indervelli and launching several development programmes, appeared to worm his way into the hearts of the tribals.

There was criticism that Revanth was commencing the campaign from Indervelli where the police in 1981 — when the Congress — shot and killed more than 40 tribals in cold blood while they were fighting for tribal rights.

The chief minister replied that he had decided to set right the historical wrongs.

“I sought the forgiveness of the people of this area when I visited them last time, since it happened when the Congress was in power in 1981. In fact, Sonia Gandhi delivered Telangana with the intention that it would prosper faster as a separate state,” he said.

More attacks on KCR

The chief minister, in his short but incisive speech, did not spare either the BJP or the BRS, who he said were led by “Modi and KD”.

He said just as Prime Minister Narendra Modi defaulted on his various promises made to the people, BRS supremo K Chandrashekar Rao ignored the interests of people — particularly tribals — in his eagerness to feather his own nest.

“There is rampant unemployment. But KCR’s son, daughter, and nephew have positions of power,” he said, adding that the KCR family had robbed the state the way the wild boars devour sugarcane in the fields.

He said the BRS government had buried the state under a pile of debt. “When KCR demitted office, the state’s accumulated debt stood at ₹7 lakh crore. When in power, KCR never thought of Telangana or its people. He never thought of the irrigation needs of the farmers in the Adilabad district. Though the KCR family spent ₹40,000 crore on Mission Bhagiratha, there is no water supply to the households in this area,” he said.

“When I was flying over Adilabad, the district appeared to wear a desolate look, with long dry stretches of land without water. We could see people digging borewells,” he said.

Revanth promised that he would change the face of the Adilabad district by adopting it. “I will get Thummidihetti, Sadarmutt Anicut, and repairs to Kadam barrage,” he said.

On Gaddar and guarantees

Recalling the humiliation balladeer Gaddar faced when he tried to meet KCR during the latter’s tenure as chief minister, Revanth said the BRS chief was now paying for his sins.

“When Gaddar wanted to meet him, he was made to wait for three hours outside Pragati Bhavan (now Praja Bhavan). The people trampled over the BRS in the recent Assembly elections for humiliating Gaddar,” he said.

The chief minister added that KCR would never again become a minister — let alone the chief minister — in his life.

At the most, he could become king of his farmhouse or buy an island and declare himself its king, like Nityananda did, he said.

Referring to the six guarantees that the Congress had given in the run-up to last year’s Telangana Assembly elections, he said two more schemes would be rolled out very soon.

While the order had been given a day earlier, Revanth clarified on Friday that these two schemes would be the supply of power up to 200 units free of cost and LPG cylinders at ₹500 each.

“We will invite our leader Priyanka Gandhi to inaugurate the subsidised-LPG-cylinder scheme. This is our commitment to the empowerment of women,” he said.

He added that the free power supply for domestic use would be up to 200 units for all white ration card holders.

“Each household’s one-year power consumption would be taken into consideration in deciding how much power should be supplied free of cost with a cap of 200 units,” he said.
