Synopsis: Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana has confirmed that her wedding to music composer Palash Muchhal is permanently called off. Following alleged family health emergencies and weeks of rumours, both sides issued statements requesting privacy. Star India cricketer Smriti Mandhana and music composer Palash Muchhal have officially ended their engagement, with the planned wedding now permanently called off.

Mandhana confirmed the news on Instagram on Sunday, 7 December, stating that both families mutually decided to cancel the marriage amid weeks of speculation.

In a brief statement, the 29-year-old vice-captain of the Indian women’s team asked for privacy and urged the public to respect the decision.

“For the past few weeks there has been considerable speculation about my personal life. Although I am an intensely private person, I feel it necessary to clarify that the wedding has been called off. I would like to draw a line under this matter and kindly request everyone to do the same. Please respect the privacy of both families during this time and allow us the space to move forward,” read her Instagram story.

‘Guided by higher purpose’

Meanwhile, she also reaffirmed her commitment to cricket and said, “I have always believed we are each guided by a higher purpose. For me, that purpose remains representing India at the highest level and winning trophies for my country. That is where my focus will always lie.”

The high-profile wedding had originally been scheduled for 23 November 2025 in Sangli, shortly after India’s victory in the Women’s World Cup. Muchhal had proposed to Mandhana on the field at DY Patil Stadium following the final, and the couple exchanged rings in a widely publicised ceremony.

However, the wedding was abruptly postponed when Mandhana’s father was rushed to hospital on the morning of the event. Soon afterwards, Muchhal was also admitted, allegedly suffering from extreme stress. Faced with consecutive family health crises, both sides agreed to suspend the celebrations.

Infidelity allegation on Muchhal

In the weeks that followed, unverified rumours spread rapidly, including allegations of infidelity levelled against Muchhal. His family strongly refuted the claims, condemning the circulation of false information.

Several Indian cricketers who had attended pre-wedding functions deleted related photographs from social media. Teammate Jemimah Rodrigues withdrew from the Women’s Big Bash League to remain in India and support Mandhana during the difficult period.

On the other hand, Muchhal too issued his own response, confirming he was moving on and warning of legal action against those spreading defamatory rumours.

Mandhana has since unfollowed Muchhal on Instagram, while he continues to follow her. Fans also noted that she was no longer wearing her engagement ring in recent posts.

The left-handed opener is expected to channel her energy back into cricket, leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women’s Premier League, which begins on 9 January in Navi Mumbai.
