Shopkeeper attacked with knife for demanding payment in Telangana; accused arrested

The incident, amidst the recent communal violence in Chengicherla, has raised concerns among social media users, with many expressing alarm at the escalating attacks targeting Hindus.

Jawaharnagar Police apprehended a person on Thursday, 28 March, in the morning for allegedly verbally and physically assaulting a member of another community while demanding payment owed to a shopkeeper.

The accused, identified as Mohammed Muzamil Ahmed, is the son of a woman, who had outstanding dues with a local shopkeeper. The victim, Ramaram (21), visited the accused’s mother, Shaheda, as instructed by his father to collect the owed amount.

Upon entering their residence, the accused, who was sleeping, abruptly confronted Ramaram, inquiring about the money owed. Subsequently, he brandished a knife and attacked the victim, causing injuries.

Legal action and arrest

M Anil Kumar Sub-Inspector of Police, Jawahar Nagar Police told South First that a case has been registered under sections 307 (punishment for attempt to murder) and 504 (Insult intended to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code.

The accused has been arrested and will be produced before the Additional Metropolitan Magistrate, Medchal Malkajgiri District.

According to the FIR accessed by South First, the incident occurred on 27 March at 5:30 pm. The victim’s father Sri Om Prakash (46) belonging to the Marwadi community, has a general store at Sai Ram Nagar colony, Dammaiguda.

In the complaint, he stated, “I have one daughter and two sons. My younger son Ramaram, aged 21 years, also has a general store at Dammaiguda.  Shaheda lives opposite my younger son and she is a regular customer of our shops.”

As per the request of Shaheda, both son and father used to send money to her relatives and known persons through their GPay and PhonePe.

The incident

On 27 March between 1 to 2 pm, Shaheda went to the complainant’s shop, and as per her request, the complainant transferred the amount to her relatives.

When the complainant asked for the outstanding amount, she asked the complainant to come to her residence in the evening hours to collect the money.

Accordingly, the complainant’s younger son, Ramaram, went to Shaheda’s residence to collect money. At that time, her son, Mohammed Muzamil Ahmed was sitting on the bed.

Upon seeing Ramaram, Ahmed became angry and shouted, “what money does my mom owe you (maa amma Ekkadi dabbulu iyyaaliraa neeku). Later, he went into the kitchen room and retrieved a large knife, proceeding to attack Ramaram with the intent to kill him.

As a result, Ramaram sustained stab wounds to his right neck, right-side ribs, and stomach.

Upon receiving the information, the complainant rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to Aditya Hospital at Dammaiguda for treatment.

The incident has sparked concern among social media users, especially in light of the recent communal violence in Chengicherla. Many are expressing alarm at the apparent escalation of attacks targeting Hindus.
