Synopsis: On the first day of the monsoon session of the Parliament, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm amid Oppositions demand to discuss Operation Sindoor. Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 12 pm and discussions were held later.

Following the Opposition’s demand to discuss Operation Sindoor and Prime Minister Modi’s clarification on foreign policy occurrences in its aftermath, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm on Monday, 21 July, the first day of the monsoon session.

Soon after the question hour began, the opposition raised slogans in the Lok Sabha, and Speaker Om Birla adjourned the Lok Sabha proceedings till noon. When the proceedings resumed at 12 pm, the Opposition continued the slogans, prompting the Speaker to adjourn the proceedings till 2 pm.

The Opposition is likely to raise several key issues, including the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad.

The Houses of Parliament will have 21 sittings during the Monsoon Session.

Income Tax Bill tabled

Soon after the Lok Sabha session began in the afternoon, BJP MP Baijayant Panda tabled in Lok Sabha the Report of the Select Committee on the Income Tax Bill, 2025 which contains 285 suggestions seeking to change the present six-decade-old legislation.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, whilst introducing the bill on 13 February, had held that the proposed legislation would make India’s direct tax law “concise, lucid, easy to read and understand”

Meanwhile, Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge referred to the remarks of US President Donald Trump — that he mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan — and a defence attache, and sought clarification from the government over the issue.

Leader of the House and Union Minister JP Nadda claimed that Kharge’s discussion of minute details of Operation Sindoor and Pahalgam terror attack was against the notice mentioned under Rule 267.

Nadda said that the government is ready to discuss both issues, adding that the government agreed to discuss the matters during the Business Advisory Council meeting, and is always ready to discuss any issue.

The Rajya Sabha was also adjourned till noon after the Opposition sought Modi’s statement on events unfolding in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam attack. Speaker Jagdeep Dhankar termed the demand “political”.
