Synopsis: Demanding a rollback of the price hike, the BJP likened the Siddaramaiah government to that of fascist rulers.

The Siddaramaiah government in Karnataka has become inhumane like the rule of Hitler or Napoleon, BJP state president BY Vijayendra said on Wednesday, 2 April.

Addressing the party’s day-and-night protest against rise in prices of essential commodities at Freedom Park in Bengaluru, Vijayendra said the government was looting the people.

“We have heard of Napoleon and Hitler’s rule in the history and we remember them for their inhuman governance. The Congress government is no less than Hitler and Napoleon. They  are looting people by hiking prices like this on essential commodities and ruling the state.”

The BJP leader urged the Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah to come out of the comfort of the air-conditioned room in Vidhana Soudha, and see first hand the people’s sufferings.

“Your governance should not be restricted just to Bengaluru. Tour around the state to find out the sufferings of the people. Get off the chair of the chief minster. If you are scared of somebody snatching that seat from you, take all your Cabinet members along with you and tour the state,” he said, obliquely referring to the alleged power struggle in the ruling Congress.

“People are suffering due to the hike in the prices of milk, water, diesel and electricity,” Vijayendra added.

Former chief minister BS Yediyurappa, R Ashoka, CT Ravi, G Janardhan Reddy, SR Vishwanath, CK Ramamurthy, Chalavadi Narayan Swamy and other leaders participated in the protest seeking a rollback of the price hike.

The yatra will move through Mandya, Hassan, Kodagu, Mangaluru, Udupi, and Chikkamagaluru, concluding the first phase by 10 April.

The second phase of the yatra will begin on 13 April, covering Shivamogga and Uttar Kannada districts, with planned pada yatras and public meetings across various regions of Karnataka.

Protest against Speaker

Earlier, the BJP staged a protest in front of the Vidhana Soudha against the Speaker UT Khader suspending 18 MLAs for six months. Besides urging the speaker to revoke the suspension, they also demanded an apology.

“If you suspend the MLAs for more than 60 days, their membership in the assembly will not be valid. We have heard of Hitler, but it is unfortunate that the government and the speaker are similar to Hitler,” BJP MLC Chalavadi Narayana Swamy said.

“As per the rules, you can suspend the members for that particular day but not more than a day. Our MLAs have been saying that speaker has taken this drastic step to become a minister in the Cabinet. However, we will not let his Hitler-like practices to continue,” he added.

The suspension, effective from 21 March, was ordered for disrespecting the Chair and throwing torn copies of a Bill at him.
