The national capital, Delhi woke up to the news of the roof collapse at Terminal 1 of the GMR-operated Delhi Airport on Friday, 28 June.
The incident happened at around 5 am at the departure area of Terminal 1 (T1) at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) amid heavy rains in the national capital.
The civil aviation ministry said heavy rain has resulted in the collapse of the canopy of Delhi Airport T1 and also promised that a thorough investigation will be followed.
However, the Opposition has alleged negligence on the part of the airport authorities and the government.
The airport operated by the GMR Group is a joint venture, formed as a consortium between GMR Airports Limited (64 percent), Airports Authority of India (26 percent), and Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide (10 percent).
According to the GMR website, DIAL (Delhi International Airport Limited) has also been named as the “Best Airport in India and South Asia” for the fifth consecutive time.
The GMR group was founded by GM Rao, hailing from Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh, in 1978.
Starting off with a Jute mill, the group became a major player in airports, energy, transportation, and urban infrastructure
