Mohanlal turned 63 on Sunday, 21 May. He started his acting career at the age of 18 by playing the central character in Thiranottam. But his first release was in 1980, acting as the antagonist in Manjil Virinja Pookkal.

The actor, in a career spanning over 40 years, has appeared in over 400 films, giving life to a variety of characters.

Known as Lalettan (meaning elder brother) even by small children, the actor is reportedly paid the highest remuneration in the Malayalam film industry.

There are many adjectives used by his fans and ardent lovers to show their love for him. Interestingly, the thespian is known as the “Complete Actor”.

Mohanlal has acted in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada languages. The actor’s performance in Ram Gopal Varma’s Company gained him popularity in Bollywood.

Iruvar in Tamil, Janatha Garage in Telugu, and Maithri in Kannada are some of the unforgettable roles played by the actor in other languages.

Top 5 films

It’s a difficult task to name the top five movies played by Mohanlal. But if someone asks me to give five good films of Mohanlal, here are my choices.

Kireedam (1989)

Mohan Lal 63Kireedam is one of the important films of Mohanlal. It bagged him the National Film Award — Special Mention.

Directed by Sibi Malayil, the film was released in 1989 and was a major commercial success.

The film was critically appreciated for the performances of Mohanlal and Thilakan.

The screenplay by Lohitadas was emotional about the relationship between a son and his father and it is regarded as one of the classics in Indian cinema.

A sequel to the film titled Chenkol was released in 1993.

Spadikam (1995)

Mohanlal.

Directed by Bhadran, Spadikam starred Mohanlal, Thilakan, KPAC Lalitha, Urvashi, and Nedumudi Venu in key roles.

The film’s story revolves around an ego clash between a father and son played by Thilakan and Mohanlal, respectively. It also discusses the need for proper parenting.

Mohanlal won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor at the 27th Kerala State Film Awards for Spadikam. It was remade in Telugu, Tamil, and in Kannada.

Spadikam attained cult status and it is considered a milestone in the career of Mohanlal.

It was re-released on 9 February this year. The latest version is a digital print that has been mixed in Dolby Atmos sound and 4K projection.

Dasaratham (1989)

Mohanlal’s collaboration with Lohitadas and Sibi Malayil produced some amazing films.

One such movie is Dasaratham. Lohithadas won the Kerala Film Critics Award for Best Scriptwriter for this film.

Mohanlal as Rajeev, a rich man who enjoys his life, was played well by the actor and the movie was one of the first to deal with the subject of surrogacy.

The subject of the movie was revolutionary in the early 1990s and it’s unbelievable to think about a movie like this 34 years ago.

Chitram (1988)

Mohanlal.

Chitram was a phenomenal movie in Malayalam as it was screened at a theatre for a year.

The movie, produced by the late PKR Pillai, went on to become an all-time blockbuster.

Directed by Priyadarshan, it had an ensemble cast including Mohanlal, Nedumudi Venu, Ranjini, Sukumari, and Sreenivasan.

Mohanlal’s character as a convict and a photographer remains fresh in the mind of movie lovers.

Chithram raked in ₹3.5 crore at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film of its time.

It was made for just ₹44 lakh.

Thanmathra (2005)

Thanmathra, directed by Blessy, has Mohanlal as a person who is suffering from Alzheimer’s.

It is based on Padmarajan’s short story Orma. It portrays the effects of Alzheimer’s disease on the life of Ramesan Nair (Mohanlal) and his family.

Thanmathra won five Kerala State Film Awards which include Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and a Special Mention Award for the debutant actor Arjun Lal.

It also won the Best Feature Film in Malayalam Award at the 53rd National Film Awards. Mohanlal’s character as Rameshan Nair was well appreciated. After this movie, people in Kerala came to know more about Alzheimer’s.

The film collected three times its budget at the box office and completed 150-day run.

Wishes from across the industry

For Mohanlal’s birthday, the other big M of the Malayalam film industry, Mammootty wished him at midnight.

Actor Prithviraj shared a picture in which it is written as “Happy Birthday AK” referring to Ab Raam Kureshi, the character of Lucifer (2019). A sequel to the movie Empuraan is on the cards and production work, starts soon.

Ardent fan of Mohanlal

Safeer Ahamed is an ardent fan of Mohanlal. He watched Mohanal’s first movie Manjil Virinja Pookkal when he was four years old.

He hails from Kodungallur in the Thrissur district of Kerala. He has been watching Mohanlal films at movie halls in Kodungallur and Thrissur for a long time.

Ram is another movie that is made on a big budget. Drishyam-director Jeethu Joseph joins Mohanal again after 12th Man.

Mohanlal will also be seen as a director as he helms his first movie Baaroz, which is touted to be a fantasy film shot in 3D.

Mohanlal and Prithviraj will join hands once again for the sequel of Lucifer named Empuraan.

In Rajinikanth’s Tamil movie Jailer, Mohanlal has an important role. He will also be seen in Vrushabha, directed by Nanda Kishore.

The film revolves around the conflict between two emotions that run the world — love vs revenge, as per the plot description.
