Congress leader Sonia Gandhi writes to PM Modi about Parliament session

Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson and leader Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday, 6 September, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pointing out that no agenda has been listed for the special Parliament session and gave the government a list of issues to discuss.

On behalf of the Opposition bloc, Sonia Gandhi raised nine issues, including violence in Manipur, for discussion.

The nine issues listed by Sonia Gandhi included Centre-state relations, a rise in cases of communal tension, border transgressions by China, and a JPC investigation into the transactions of the Adani business group.

The letter also included the issue of the urgent need for a caste census.

“I must point out that this special session has been convened without any consultation with other political parties. None of us have any idea of its agenda. All we have been communicated is that all five days have been allocated for government business,” Gandhi said in her letter.

“I earnestly hope that in a spirit of constructive cooperation, these issues will be taken up in the forthcoming special session,” she said.

‘Without an agenda’

Addressing the media at the AICC headquarters, in Delhi, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said this is the first time that no agenda has been discussed or listed in the business of the House.

“There were special sessions previously also and every time, the agenda will be finalised first, there would be discussions, and the decision on agenda would be made jointly,” he said.

He further said, “We (INDIA alliance parties) have decided not to boycott the special session (of the Parliament). This is an opportunity for us to raise the issues of people.”

Jairam Ramesh said that the decision was made after discussing with all the floor leaders of the Parliament of the INDIA alliance parties.

“We want the upcoming session to be constructive, and this was decided at the meeting of the strategy group and during the meeting of INDIA parties,” Ramesh said.

The congress leader further said, “It was also decided that Sonia Gandhi will write a letter to PM Modi, apprising him of the discussions held in the INDIA alliance meeting.”

“If there is no ‘shehnai’ of democracy in the mother of democracy, then what kind of democracy is this,” Ramesh asked.

He said the rules under which the discussion can take place can be discussed mutually.

Ramesh also alleged that the prime minister is in “panic” and “tired”.

The special session of Parliament will be held from 18 to 22 September.
