The Union government has convened a special session of Parliament for five days between 18 and 22 September, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday, 31 August.

There was no official word on the agenda of the session, which will be held days after the G20 Summit in the national capital on 9 and 10 September.

“Special Session of Parliament (13th Session of 17th Lok Sabha and 261st Session of Rajya Sabha) is being called from 18th to 22nd September having five sittings. Amid Amrit Kaal looking forward to having fruitful discussions and debate in Parliament,” he said on X.

Opposition reacts

The announcement caused a buzz in political circles with speculation rife on the reason for the special session. These ranhed from talk of an early Lok Sabha election to restoring the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.

There are also speculations that the session was announced to divert people’s attention from a report released by Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) on Thursday, which trained guns at billionaire Gautam Adani’s group.

It alleged that hundreds of millions of dollars were invested in publicly traded group stocks through Mauritius-based “opaque” investment funds managed by partners of the promoter family, charges the conglomerate denied vehemently.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh alleged that the session was announced to counter the latest “Modani” scam and to disrupt the Opposition parties’ alliance INDIA’s progress.

“Managing the News Cycle, Modi style. 1. News today has been dominated by latest revelations on the Modani-scam. 2. Tomorrow the ever-growing INDIA parties meet in Mumbai. How to counter?  Announce a 5-day special session of Parliament when Monsoon session has just ended 3 weeks back. Regardless, the JPC demand will continue to resonate inside and outside Parliament,” he said on X.

However, CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP Binoy Viswam said that even if it was a special session or not, they would raise several issues.

“Special or non special session – @Parliament is meant for discussion .Issues are numerous.Five days are inadequate. Our focus will be @Manipur, #price rise, #democracy, attack on #Dalits and #minorities, #Adani-Modi tie up etc.. Fearful of it @BJP4India may try to disrupt parliament,” he wrote on X.
