The Kerala government is moving ahead with legislation to address human-wildlife conflict, with a draft bill currently under the scrutiny of the Law Department.

The decision was conveyed during a meeting of MPs convened by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at the Government Guest House in Thiruvananthapuram, ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which will commence from 21 July.

The meeting saw a collective resolve to push for the Centre’s approval of ₹2221.10 crore for Meppadi in Wayanad and Rs 98.10 crore for Vilangadu in Malappuram as part of the post-disaster rehabilitation plan following the landslide in July 2024.

The MPs agreed to demand restoration of Section 13 in the National Disaster Management Act and to press for amendments to Section 11 of the Wildlife Protection Act, empowering states to act on local needs.

The chief minister also sought Parliamentarians’ support for pending railway projects and crucial financial demands, including increasing Kerala’s borrowing limit and clearing IGST arrears.

Key infrastructure projects, AIIMS allocation, national highway development, Kannur airport connectivity, and opposition to a proposed US agricultural import pact also figured in the discussions.

MPs vowed cross-party cooperation for Kerala’s development agenda in the national capital.
