Two police personnel were injured when the pandal set up for the state-level inauguration of the Forest and Wildlife Week celebrations collapsed in Idukki district’s Kumily.

The incident occurred around 1 pm on Monday, October 5, when the pandal was reportedly being dismantled. The accident occurred minutes after Forest Minister Shibu Baby John, who inaugurated the event, left the venue.

According to eyewitnesses, the injured police officers were standing beneath the structure when it suddenly gave way. They were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Eyewitnesses said a major tragedy was narrowly averted, as the accident occurred shortly after the minister and the crowd that had gathered to hear his speech left the venue.

According to reports, the participants at the event included school students.

Preliminary findings suggest that flaws in the construction of the pandal may have contributed to the collapse.

Visuals from the site show chairs, speakers and other items lying scattered beneath the collapsed pandal.

The accident has raised questions over the safety arrangements at the venue, particularly as the structure was being dismantled while personnel were still present underneath it.
