Three more days. That is the time BJP councillor R Sreelekha needs to explain her position on reports that she had planned to resign from the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
The ex-DGP, who represents the Sasthamangalam ward, promised that she would speak about the issue on Sunday, October 11.
“I wish to explain why the media spent three or four days making a big deal out of claims that I had resigned. Please wait until Sunday, October 11. Do hear what I have to say as well,” she wrote. She did not explain why she had settled on Sunday as the day of explanation.
Reports had surfaced that Sreelekha had submitted her resignation to Mayor VV Rajesh on September 30.
The Mayor, who is also from the BJP, later said that she had handed over a letter and that some concerns were raised in it. He, however, didn’t clarify whether Sreelekha had mentioned resigning in it. All he said was that a resignation would have to be submitted to the Corporation Secretary and not to him.
The development led to intervention by the BJP state leadership.
State General Secretary S Suresh visited Sreelekha while she was undergoing treatment in hospital after experiencing physical discomfort. Party leaders later maintained that she had not proceeded with the resignation.
Sreelekha also removed a message about her resignation from a WhatsApp group.
A photograph of Suresh visiting Sreelekha was subsequently shared on social media by BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar and other party leaders.
The episode came amid reports of Sreelekha’s dissatisfaction over not being named the Mayor. Her reported decision to step down had created a political problem for the BJP, which currently runs the Corporation with the support of an independent councillor.
If Sreelekha had resigned, the BJP’s wafer-thin majority in the 101-member Corporation would have vaporised. Sreelekha’s proposed statement on Sunday is expected to provide her account of the developments that led to the resignation reports and the subsequent intervention by the party leadership.
