On Saturday, 22 November morning, an unidentified body of a woman, stuffed inside a sack, was found by the sanitation workers of the Haritha Karma Sena, in the compound of a house near the Konthuruthy church, Kochi.
Later in the day, Ernakulam South police confirmed it as murder. The police also added that a person, George, who was found dozing near to the body, has confessed to the murder.
In his statement, he claimed that the woman was a sex worker whom he brought home from the Ernakulam South Railway Station on Friday, 21 November night. The two reportedly got into a quarrel over money soon after reaching his residence.
Investigators say that during the heated exchange, George struck the woman on the head with a hammer, killing her on the spot. Bloodstains were found inside the house, confirming that the murder occurred indoors.
Police believe George attempted to dispose of the body between 4:30 am and 5 am by dragging it out with a rope. However, he collapsed from intoxication before he could complete the act.
Locals told police that George had been visibly drunk the previous night.
Officers also learned that he had asked people for a sack, claiming he needed it to bury a dog. When residents couldn’t provide one, he went to a nearby shop and managed to obtain two sacks — believed to be the ones later found covering the body.
The identity of the victim remains unknown. Police suspect she may be a native of Ernakulam and have begun efforts to trace her family and verify George’s claims. Residents told the media that the deceased woman was not a local resident and that they had never seen her in the neighbourhood before.
The investigation is underway, and the body has been sent for postmortem.
George, a palliative care worker had been staying alone for a few days. The police is also questioning two migrant workers staying as tenants in George’s house.
“George has been living here for years. His wife stays at her home; the children are away. The tenant says he heard some noise early in the morning,” a local resident said.
His son is employed in the UK, and George had been living alone for a few days.
His house is flanked by a residential flat on one side and a hostel across the road.
Police have already begun examining CCTV footage from the hostel as part of the investigation.
