Union Minister of State (MoS) Suresh Gopi expressed his desire to resign from his post and suggested that newly elected Rajya Sabha member C Sadanandan Master be considered as his replacement in the Union Cabinet.

Speaking at a party event attended by Sadanandan on Sunday, 12 October, the actor-politician said the senior leader’s entry into the Rajya Sabha was a major moment for Kannur’s political scene. He added that making Sadanandan a minister would mark a new chapter in Kerala politics.

Gopi, who serves as Minister of State for Petroleum and Tourism, said he hopes Sadanandan’s office in the state will soon function as a minister’s office.

Stepped away from politics

The actor-turned-politician, who joined the BJP in 2016, said he was likely chosen as a minister in recognition of the support he received in the Lok Sabha polls. He also noted that he did not enter politics seeking power and that his income had reduced after stepping away from his film career.

Last year, there were reports that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Amit Shah asked Gopi to suspend his cinema plans and concentrate on his work as a politician and Union minister.

The speculation gathered strength after Gopi, who represents Thrissur in the Lok Sabha, shaved his beard. Gopi, a national award-winning actor, had been reiterating that he could not imagine a life without working in cinemas.

It has been reported that the BJP top brass asked Gopi to step away from the cinema arc light and dedicate himself full-time to politics. The reports came amidst the actor’s growing role in the Kerala BJP.

Sources in the BJP’s state unit had said then that Gopi was entrusted with a new responsibility after he met with the prime minister. Additionally, they also said that he was asked to focus entirely on his ministerial duties and his constituency.
