Synopsis: Preliminary findings indicate that loans totalling ₹2.54 crore were granted in violation of society bylaws, resulting in a loss of ₹14.14 lakh. Outstanding dues under the Pravasi deposit scheme amounted to ₹4.11 crore, and the society president reportedly owed ₹3.3 lakh as advance repayment.

A Special Investigation Team led by Cantonment ACP Stuart Keeler has launched a probe into the suicide of BJP councillor K. Anilkumar.

Poojapura police had earlier recorded the death as unnatural, stating that Anilkumar’s suicide note did not blame anyone.

Speaking to the media, ACP Keeler said the investigation will examine the circumstances leading to Anilkumar’s death. Notices have been served to the Valiyasala Farmtour Cooperative Society for relevant documents, and other office bearers may be questioned if required.

Following allegations from the CPM district leadership that BJP members pressured Anilkumar, the Department of Cooperation initiated a probe under the Cooperative Societies Act.

Preliminary findings indicate that loans totalling ₹2.54 crore were granted in violation of society bylaws, resulting in a loss of ₹14.14 lakh. Outstanding dues under the Pravasi deposit scheme amounted to ₹4.11 crore, and the society president reportedly owed ₹3.3 lakh as advance repayment.

The inquiry, being conducted under sections 65, 66, and 68 of the Act, is expected to be completed within three months, with the Vattiyoorkavu unit inspector determining the liability of society office bearers.

Political row

In the note, Anilkumar is said to have defended the society’s functioning while admitting that many who borrowed money had failed to repay.

The CPM has alleged that the, our people, mentioned in the note refers to BJP leaders and workers, and has launched protests demanding a detailed probe into the role of party members.

District secretary V. Joy claimed that BJP leaders had taken large sums from the society for election campaigns and party programmes, while also pointing to irregular loans and benami transactions.

Education Minister V. Sivankutty echoed this view, arguing that Anilkumar was betrayed by those closest to him and that the BJP cannot wash its hands of the issue, given its control over the Valyashala farm society.

For the BJP, the loss of Anilkumar is a major setback ahead of local body elections, as he was a prominent voice against the LDF in the council.

The suicide

K Anilkumar was found was dead on 20 September after allegedly hanging himself inside his office at the Valiyasala Farm Tour Society, where he served as president.

According to police, Anilkumar reached his office around 8 am and ended his life.

A suicide note recovered from the scene points to severe mental distress caused by a financial crisis in the society, which had reportedly disbursed loans worth over ₹6 crore.

When investors sought repayment, the society was unable to meet demands, prompting complaints at the Thampanoor police station.

In his note, Anilkumar wrote that he and his family had not taken any money, but he was left to face the crisis alone.

He accused colleagues of isolating him and added that he was portrayed as a criminal. “I am taking all the blame, that is why I am ending my life,” the note stated.
