Adviser to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah BR Patil, who represents the Aland constituency in Kalaburagi, resigned from his role on Saturday, 1 February.
The senior Congress leader had recently staged a hunger strike in solidarity with farmers protesting for a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops.
Patil, who was made the chief minister’s advisor in December 2023, formally submitted his resignation at the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in Bengaluru.
Sources claim Patil was reportedly upset over the denial of funds for the development of his constituency and the role given to him in the government.
Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah acknowledged Patil’s resignation.
“The letter has reached my Bengaluru office. I haven’t read it. I’ll speak to (Patil),” he said. “There’s no rift between us,” the chief minister said.
After resigning, Patil said in Kalaburagi that it was not a special development and he had made the decision long ago.
“This is not a special development. I had decided to resign long ago. There was a delay over the Governor’s decision, so I waited until that was cleared before resigning,” he said.
“I have no dissatisfaction. You (the media) are the ones creating issues. There are problems, but I won’t disclose them publicly,” Patil added.
He said he would talk to the chief minister but would not take back the resignation.
“There are some issues, and I will discuss them with the Chief Minister. Under no circumstances will I take back my resignation. In a family (politics), problems are inevitable. I will share everything with the CM,” Patil said.
“Funds are not being allocated properly (for Kalaburagi), and as an MLA, I am unable to carry out developmental works,” he said.
“I should have resigned earlier but, it does not mean I was afraid or resigned under pressure. That position became legally valid only recently. That’s why I resigned.”
