President nominates Kerala BJP leader C Sadanandan Master, three others to Rajya Sabha

The deputy vice president of the BJP Kerala is among the four distinguished individuals nominated by the President to the Rajya Sabha under Article 80(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution.

President Droupadi Murmu nominated Kerala BJP leader C Sadanandan Master, a teacher from the Kannur district known for his enduring contributions to education and his resilience in the face of political violence, to the Rajya Sabha.

The deputy vice president of the BJP Kerala is among the four distinguished individuals nominated by the President to the Rajya Sabha under Article 80(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint members with special knowledge or practical experience in areas such as literature, science, art, and social service.

Former Foreign Secretary Shringla, Special Public Prosecutor in the Mumbai terror attacks case Ujjwal Nikam and historian Meenakshi Jain were also nominated by the President.

The nomination was announced in the Gazette on Saturday, 12 July, which noted that they are being nominated to fill the vacancies caused by the retirement of nominated members.

The President nominates 12 members as her nominees to the Rajya Sabha. Out of these 12, four seats are currently vacant.

Career of C Sadanandan Master

Sadanandan Master has been serving as a social science teacher at Sree Durga Vilasam HSS in Peramangalam in the Thrissur district since 1999. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Gauhati University and a Bachelor of Education from Calicut University.

Apart from his teaching role, he is actively involved in educational advocacy as the vice-president of the National Teachers Union in Kerala and serves as the editor of its official publication, Deshiya Adhyapaka Vartha. He had also served on the editorial team of the BJP’s Kerala mouthpiece Janmabhoomi.

On 25 January 1994, when he was the victim of a brutal attack near his home in Kannur, a region long associated with political violence. At the age of 30, Sadanandan lost both of his legs in the assault, which was allegedly carried out by members of the CPI(M) due to his ideological departure from the party.

He contested the Kerala Assembly elections from Koothuparamba in 2016 and 2021 as the BJP candidate.  His wife, Vanitha Rani, is a teacher, and their daughter, Yamuna Bharati, is currently pursuing a BTech degree.
