The incident

There are also unconfirmed reports that Jagan was in an inebriated state during the time of the incident.

He reached the school at around 10.00 am on Tuesday inquiring about a student. Unable to find the student, he went inside the staff room of the school and threatened the staff present there.

Subsequently, he entered a classroom and fired three rounds using an air gun which he reportedly purchased from a weaponry store in the city.

The man has also allegedly threatened to set the school on fire. Soon after he started creating a scene, the school authorities informed the police.

“He is an alumnus of the school. We have records that he is over 18 years of age. Our understanding is that he was a drug addict. He was cluelessly running around the school with the gun in hand,” the school principal told local media.

“He came to school like a normal person. However, he spontaneously became violent and started threatening the staff. He ran around the classrooms and fired shots inside one of them,” the principal added.

Jagan is now in police custody and further details are awaited. Following the incident, District Collector VR Krishna Teja and Thrissur Mayor MK Varghese rushed to the school.

“A young person has come to the school. He was a bit unsteady and used his pistol and fired two or three rounds. That’s what the school authorities have told us. He was taken into custody. It’s an isolated incident and an investigation is on. There is no need to worry. We are all here. He will be produced before a doctor,” Teja told the media.

The age of the accused could not be ascertained immediately.

The visuals of the accused sitting inside the staff room of the school brandishing a gun which he took out from his bag are being telecast by television channels.

Meanwhile, Varghese told reporters that the gun that the man used was not an air pistol. More clarity is awaited.
