Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday, 23 April, said that it was “unfortunate” that the Election Commission (EC) was not acting in a non-partisan manner by taking immediate action in connection with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks against Muslims.

Vijayan contended it was a situation where the EC ought to have acted immediately, but till now it has been silent on the issue.

“It is unfortunate. The EC should have shown it was non-partisan. It should have acted immediately,” the Marxist veteran said at a press meet here.

Vijayan said that this is an issue which would have to be raised before the Supreme Court.

At the same time, he claimed that because of such statements by the prime minister, the anti-BJP sentiment in the nation is strengthening and the saffron party will be isolated even further.

‘Anti-national remark’

On Monday, Vijayan termed Modi’s alleged remarks as “anti-national” and urged the EC to take action against him.

Addressing an election meeting in Kannur district, the Marxist veteran said the prime minister had insulted the Muslim community by specifically naming them.

Stating that the prime minister had described the Muslim community as infiltrators, Vijayan wondered how he could refer to the people of the country like that.

Muslims have been living here for generations, and they have played key roles in various phases of the country, he said, adding that their contributions to the freedom movement could not be replaced.

“Action should be taken against the prime minister. The Election Commission should be ready to take action against him,” the chief minister said.

Vijayan also said the prime minister is a person who is responsible for leading the people of the country together.

Accusing the BJP of using communal cards at every stage and spreading communalism in a bigger way whenever it senses danger, Vijayan said the statement of the prime minister makes it clear that the saffron party was aware of the erosion of soil beneath its feet.

Targets RSS

Targeting the RSS, Vijayan further said that those who had played no role in the freedom movement are now ruling the country.

“They are trying to destroy all the significant values of the country. We know that the BJP government has made many interventions to change the Election Commission as per their wish,” he added.

Stating that the strength of the country’s democracy needs to be properly expressed, Vijayan said the EC should be ready to take action against such illegal activities.

Modi, during a poll rally in Rajasthan’s Banswara on Sunday, said that if the Congress comes to power, it would redistribute people’s wealth to Muslims.

He also alleged that Congress plans to give people’s hard-earned money and valuables to “infiltrators” and “those who have more children.”

Criticising the statement, Vijayan also accused the prime minister of carrying out a communal campaign by fabricating imaginary stories to create anti-Muslim hatred among people.
