A photoshoot involving police personnel at the sacred 18 steps of the Sabarimala shrine has sparked outrage among Hindu organisations. They accuse the officers of violating long-standing customs associated with the revered site.
The controversy began after images surfaced of the officers posing in front of the sacred steps with their backs turned, an act that devotees and Hindu groups argue disrespects the shrine’s traditions.
The 18 steps, known as Pathinettampadi, hold deep symbolic significance in Sabarimala rituals, and devotees typically approach the steps with the utmost reverence. Even priests performing poojas traditionally descend facing the steps, underscoring their sanctity.
Hindu organisations have expressed their strong disapproval, claiming that the police’s actions were not only inappropriate but also insensitive to the spiritual importance of the site.
The personnel involved were part of the first batch of police officers deployed for the ongoing Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season, which attracts thousands of devotees to the temple. The photoshoot is said to have taken place on the final day of the officers’ duty, just before a new batch took over their responsibilities.
As the images spread widely on social media, the incident caught the attention of senior police officials. ADGP S Sreejith, the chief police coordinator for Sabarimala, reportedly sought a report from Sannidhanam Special Officer KE Baiju, and an internal investigation into the matter is underway. The police are examining the circumstances surrounding the photoshoot and its appropriateness.
Hindu organisations have demanded a formal apology from the police personnel involved, as well as corrective action. They emphasised the need for greater awareness among officials stationed at Sabarimala about the site’s customs and religious significance.
Devotees and community leaders have called for a review of protocols for all personnel serving at the shrine, to ensure that the sacred traditions of Sabarimala are respected and upheld.
