Synopsis: A police officer from Kanakamma Chathiram station in Tiruvallur was suspended after a viral video showed him assaulting three women inside the station. One victim, who is pregnant, remains in critical condition. The women had earlier filed a harassment complaint against a man named Sivaji. The incident, which occurred in Kalagasathiram, has triggered public outrage and calls for accountability
A police officer from Kanakamma Chathiram station has been suspended after a shocking video surfaced online showing him assaulting three women inside the station premises.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, particularly as one of the women, who is pregnant, is currently in critical condition at Tiruvallur Government Medical College Hospital.
The incident took place in Kalagasathiram, Tiruttani Taluk. The victims — Dhanam, Madhumitha, and Sevvanthi — had earlier approached the police with a complaint against a local man named Sivaji, who allegedly harassed Madhumitha with obscene remarks and abusive messages.
Dissatisfied with the police response, Madhumitha reportedly confronted Sivaji’s wife, which enraged Sivaji. He allegedly assaulted the three women, injuring Sevvanthi.
When the women returned to the Kanakamma Chathiram station to seek action, police officer Raman, who was on duty, allegedly refused to register their complaint and asked them to leave.
An argument ensued, during which Raman is accused of using derogatory language and physically assaulting all three women.
A bystander captured the incident on video, which soon went viral on social media, drawing strong condemnation from the public, rights activists, and political leaders.
The video appears to show officer Raman striking one of the women inside the station.
Taking cognizance of the incident, Superintendent of Police Srinivasa Perumal suspended the officer and ordered a departmental inquiry.
The victims, meanwhile, have demanded that a criminal case be registered against Raman under appropriate legal provisions.
The case has intensified ongoing concerns about police accountability and the treatment of women complainants in police stations across the state.
