Malayalam film fraternity expresses agony over Brahmapuram fire mishap

On their social media accounts, the artists shared their personal experiences caused by the toxic gases which engulfed the city from the past 12 days.

The Malayalam film fraternity has expressed their shock and agony over the Brahmapuram plastic waste fire in Kochi that polluted the skies in the city and the neighbouring district of Alappuzha.

Kochi has been reeling under toxic fumes for the last 12 days after the garbage mounds at the Kochi Municipal Corporation-run waste treatment plant near Brahmapuram caught fire on 2 March.

Huge and thick clouds of toxic smoke billowing from the site engulfed the city since then. Even after 12 days, the government machinery hasn’t been able to make the situation under control as smoke has engulfed the sky.

Ernakulam District Collector Umesh NSK on Sunday, 12 March, claimed that 95 per cent of the fire has been extinguished. According to him, the government sought the help of the New York City Fire Department to bring the situation under control.

Celebrities react

Most of the Mollywood actors who live in Kochi, the hub of Malayalam cinema, shared their despair over the incident and revealed how it affected them, too.

In a Facebook post, Manju Warrier said that it’s not clear when this tragic situation will end. She saluted the volunteers who are working hard to bring the situation under control. The Ayisha-actress hoped Kochi will be back soon.

Mollywood superstar Mammootty who stays in Elamkulam in Kochi expressed his apprehensions over the fire incident. A permanent solution has to be found even if the present situation is sorted out, Mammootty was quoted as saying by Manorama Online.

He said he was in Pune for shooting and after reaching back home, he developed a cough which led to breathing issues. When he contacted others, the actor came to know that many people in Kochi have gone to their native places.

Prithviraj Sukumaran also shared the directions of the district administration on Facebook regarding the precautionary measures to be taken to handle the smoke.

Actor-producer Vijay Babu was the first among the celebrities to express his shock at the incident. He shared pictures of waste dumped on roads and a photo of the sky in smoke and even wrote “Life has become hell in Kochi”.

Mollywood actress Grace Antony was another important voice who spoke about the Brahmapuram fire mishap.
In her Facebook post, the actor said she and her family are facing severe cough and breathing issues due to the release of toxic gases.

If people staying inside houses are facing such difficulty, she wondered what could be the situation of firefighters and forefront workers who are trying to douse the fire. She also stressed finding a solution so that such disasters won’t recur.

Director Midhun Manuel Thomas was also shocked by the situation. He described the Brahmapuram fire incident as one of the major environmental disasters that happened in Kerala.

Expressing his concern that the city is engulfed in toxic fumes, he demanded an answer from the respective authorities for their negligence.

Music director Bijibal Maniyil wrote a long Facebook post regarding the Brahmapuram fire incident. He said he can see the city burning and lots of plastic there.

He explained that there are emissions of dioxins, benzopyrenes, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Many are ill and even some of his friends are hospitalised.

The Malayalam music composer said he is worried about the newly-born and the unborn. He also accused authorities of being corrupt and failing utterly to ensure a peaceful life for the citizens.

Comedian Ramesh Pisharody sarcastically lashed out at those who are trying to defend the authorities.

He wrote on Facebook that he has huge respect for firefighters, forefront workers who are trying to make the situation under control. But he felt sorry about those who are justifying the political correctness by coughing, wheezing, and scratching.
