Milma price hike
Synopsis: Milma officials said the hike was structured in a way that dairy farmers would receive an additional ₹3.35 per litre. The cooperative said the revision was essential to support farmers struggling with rising production expenses and falling returns.
Milma has increased the price of milk by ₹4 per litre in Kerala, with the revised rates coming into effect from 1 June.
The final decision was taken at the board meeting of the state-run dairy cooperative held on Wednesday, 20 May, after receiving government approval.
Milma officials said the hike was structured in a way that dairy farmers would receive an additional ₹3.35 per litre.
The cooperative said the revision was essential to support farmers struggling with rising production expenses and falling returns.
In a statement, Milma said dairy farmers in Kerala were facing severe hardship due to the sharp rise in cattle feed prices, drought conditions, and increasing milk procurement costs from neighbouring states.
Regional unions were also incurring losses in milk sales, it added.
“The increase in milk price is absolutely necessary to retain dairy farmers in this sector and address the significant rise in production costs,” the statement said.
Milma had earlier sought a hike of ₹4 to ₹6 per litre, citing mounting operational pressures.
A three-member committee appointed by the cooperative had also recommended an increase of up to ₹6 per litre after studying the issue.
Although the Milma Board of Directors had approved the proposal nearly six months ago, the government had delayed clearance in view of the election period.
The approval was finally granted following repeated demands from Milma and regional unions seeking relief for dairy farmers.
The prices of other milk products are also expected to go up following the latest revision.
