Kerala’s special textbooks for aurally-challenged children to set a national model

Kerala’s initiative to prepare special textbooks for aurally-challenged children will serve as a model for the country, said General Education and Employment Minister V Sivankutty.

He was speaking after releasing 12 specially designed textbooks and workbooks for Classes 1 to 3 students in 32 special schools across the state.

The SCERT developed the textbooks after studying the learning difficulties faced by aurally-challenged children, finding that general textbooks lacked suitable visual and phonetic support.

The new books prioritize visual experiences, simplified language, and ICT tools to make learning independent, enjoyable, and effective.

Practical testing was conducted this academic year, and improvements will be made based on feedback from teachers and parents.

The function, held at Jagathy Government School for the Deaf in Thiruvananthapuram, was presided over by Director of General Education Shanavas S, with SCERT Director Jayaprakash and Samagra Shiksha Keralam State Project Director Supriya A.R. attending.
