The Kerala Societies Registration Bill, 2025, aimed at bringing all societies in the state under a single law, was tabled in the Assembly on Tuesday.

The Bill seeks to replace the Societies Registration Act of 1860, applicable in the Malabar region, and the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Act of 1955, which governs the rest of the state.

Presenting the Bill, Registration Minister Kadannapally Ramachandran said the two outdated Acts, predating the formation of Kerala, had dissimilar provisions that often created administrative hurdles, with different laws operating within the same district.

The new law, he said, would strengthen transparency, enable timely amendments, and empower authorities to investigate complaints.

Appeals can be filed before the Inspector General of Registration and the State government. The proposed law, which comprises 45 sections, has been referred to the Subject Committee.
